Bar to kg/cm² Converter

To convert bar to kg/cm², multiply by 1.01972, or divide by 0.980665 for an exact result. 10 bar is 10.1972 kg/cm². The kg/cm² on a gauge is kilogram-force per square centimetre (kgf/cm²).

How It Works

Use it when a European specification in bar has to be read against a pump, compressor or gauge scaled in kg/cm², which is common on equipment built for Asian and Latin American markets. 1 bar is 1.01972 kg/cm², so a figure in kg/cm² is always slightly larger than the same pressure in bar.

Formula

kg/cm² = bar × 1.01972

1 bar is 100,000 Pa and 1 kgf/cm² is 98,066.5 Pa (one kilogram-force, 9.80665 N, on a square centimetre), so the conversion is exact; 1.01972 is the factor rounded to six figures.

Worked Example

A valve is rated PN16, a maximum allowable pressure of 16 bar at 20 °C:

16 × 1.01972 = 16.3155 kg/cm²

FAQ

Common questions about converting bar to kg/cm².

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert bar to kg/cm²?

Multiply bar by 1.01972. For example, 6 bar × 1.01972 = 6.11832 kg/cm².

Is 1 bar equal to 1 kg/cm²?

Not quite. 1 bar is 1.01972 kg/cm², about 2% more. A difference that small only matters when you set a relief valve or check a pressure rating.

What is 10 bar in kg/cm²?

10 bar is 10.1972 kg/cm², or 145.038 psi.

Is atmospheric pressure 1 bar or 1 kg/cm²?

Neither exactly. Standard atmospheric pressure is 1.01325 bar, which is 1.03323 kg/cm². Gauge readings in bar(g) or kg/cm²(g) start from local atmospheric pressure, so convert gauge to gauge and absolute to absolute.

Why do some gauges show kg/cm² instead of bar?

kg/cm² was the metric engineering unit before the SI, and much equipment for Asian and Latin American markets still carries it. Bar became the usual metric gauge unit in Europe. Both are close to atmospheric pressure: 1 bar is 0.986923 atm and 1 kg/cm² is 0.967841 atm.
